The different types of exercise equipment now available can be quite overwhelming at times. There is equipment that is specialized for use by all different levels of people or athletes and the particular purpose of any piece of equipment can be very general or very specific. One of the reasons why exercise equipment tends to be so popular with the general public is that it helps give people direction and focus in their workouts.

Types of Exercise Equipment:
If you are ready to get in shape or improve your workout, there are many types of exercise equipment you should become familiar with. Exercise equipment falls into two categories based on the type of exercise provided: cardio or strength training. Both types of exercise, along with stretching, are essential to a balanced and effective fitness regimen.

Cardio Exercise Equipment:
Cardio exercise equipment is the sort of equipment that is going to get your heart rate up, the type that makes you sweat. Cardio exercise equipment is going to help you increase your heart health and to burn fat.

Of course, if truth be told, your cardio workouts will be more effective if you include some strength training in your regime – training with weights will help you maintain the results of cardio and also help you build muscular strength.

Some examples of cardio exercise equipment include:

Strength Exercise Equipment:
Strength training is also extremely important, and it goes hand in hand with cardio workouts. Unfortunately, some people skip strength training in favor of the cardio workouts because they are interested only in burning fat.

There are two main types of strength exercise equipment:Strength Training

  • Free weights – this includes dumbbells and barbells. Many people like using free weights because there are so many exercises that can be done with them, they are relatively in expensive, and you have a free range of motion.

  • Weight machines – weight machines tend to be more expensive than the other type of strength exercise equipment, but they can be very effective at working particular muscular groups. Also, most weight machines train your muscles to do lifts and press, etc. correctly, lowering the chance of injury.

Some strength training exercise equipment does not include weights, but allows you to use your body weight for resistance. Chin up bars, which work the biceps and triceps, and crunch machines, which work the abdominals, are examples of this type of exercise equipment.

Resistance and balance exercise equipment can also be effective for strength training. This type of exercise equipment can be used on its own or in combination with free weights. Doing crunches on an inflatable exercise ball or lunges on an inflatable pad work muscles all over your body by forcing you to keep your balance as you complete strength building exercises. Resistance equipment such as elastic bands can build muscular strength without the use of weights.

Most gyms provide plenty of options for you to customize and vary your workout. Before using any exercise equipment for the first time, you should be sure that you understand how it works and how to use it most effectively.
